Support for COVID-19 and other Infections

These supplements are proven to boost immunity, which is desirable to help the body COPE with any infection.

Based on Latest Evidence-Based guidelines, South African Society of Integrative Medicine (SASIM) discussions.

  1. Food as Medicine
  • Increase your intake of anti-inflammatory, alkalinizing (Whole) foods:
  • 1 cup of veggies per meal, fruit and nuts to snack, beans, legumes and brown rice instead of rice, bread and maize.
  • Use spices and herbs to flavor each meal (turmeric, coriander, parsley, basil, cumin, chili, ginger, garlic, cinnamon, cardamom, etc).
  • Drink 1.5-2L of water daily to stay hydrated. Filtered and remineralized water, if accessible.
  • Drink herbal teas 2-3 times per day, e.g: buchu, rooibos, chamomile, peppermint, nettle tea, to enhance detoxification of kidneys, gut and liver.
  • Bone Broth: make your own or buy from OK Foods, Gateway. Drink 1/2 cup daily.
  • If you aren’t a fan of veggies, drink an Alkalinizing Powder: Multi-force Alkaline Powder (A.Vogel), taken morning and night. Even if you eat well, this is a great additional boost.

 

Minimize the following foods to enhance absorption of nutrients and take pressure off your digestive system for optimal immunity:

  • Sugar! Sugar intake prevents vitamin C from entering cells, and significantly decreases immunity.
  • Gluten and dairy. Even if you’re not intolerant, these foods cause gut inflammation, decreasing immunity and absorption of vital nutrients.
  • Alcohol. Drinking more than 1 unit per day puts pressure on your liver, decreasing ability to filter out viral particles as needed.
  • Coffee. Have organic filter coffee, 1 cup per day, no more. Your adrenal glands need to keep adrenalin & cortisol levels balanced during this stressful time.
  • Processed (junk) foods (especially cured and processed meat and cheese) decrease absorption of vital nutrients.
  • Decrease meat intake (red meat, chicken) to twice per week. Have 1-2 eggs per day (animal protein increases the acidity levels in the tissues, putting pressure on the entire system).

Dr Julienne’s Green Goddess Smoothie Recipe

 

1/4 cup coconut cream/milk/water
1/4 cup pineapple/banana, chopped and frozen
1/4 cup frozen berries
4 TBSP soaked chia seeds (whisk chia with coconut milk and water in a bowl overnight)
1 tsp cinnamon ground (add some ground cardamom if desired)
1 TBSP green powder (The Real Thing Veggie Powder or Green Vibrance powder)
2-3 leaves kale, off their stalks
1/2 avocado, if in season
1 tsp psyllium husks
1TBSP flax seeds
Top up with filtered water to make a drinkable consistency

Blend and enjoy! Drink half for breakfast, and the rest as a snack through-out the day, as preferred.

Sleep

  • Good QUALITY sleep is vital for keeping your entire system balanced.
  • During Lock Down, you may have your own hours to rise and sleep when you like. Stick to your set sleeping patterns, to keep your circadian rhythm in check.
  • Avoid late-night TV or social media (LED lights stimulate your brain).
  • Eat dinner and drink your last liquids more than 2 hours before sleeping.
  • Breathing and meditation practice prior to sleeping and listen to sleep-enhancing music.

 

 Supplements to aid a good night’s rest:

  • Release Forte (natural SSRI: Sceletium concentrate with magnesium), take 1-2 1 hour before bedtime with extra magnesium 1-2 caps (Willow, Magnesium Glycinate).

Help Prevent Disease:

EVEN if you have NO symptoms: Help decrease the viral load in your nasal passages and prevent secondary bacterial infection (a ‘post-nasal-drip’ may lead to bronchitis or pneumonia):

  • Sinus steaming: add 1 cup Epsom salts into a bath, cover your head with a towel and breathe in deeply 5 times, taking a short break in between and stop if feeling dizzy. Repeat for 4-6 cycles. Add peppermint or eucalyptus oil for added airway opening. Use a basin if you don’t have a bath.
  • Nasal flushing: in a ‘Netti-pot’ or 750ml plastic water bottle with a nozzle, add 1 teaspoon salt (fine non-iodized salt)  and 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, and 2 TBSP Colloidal silver (optional) to 500ml of luke-warm water. Shake well.
Use pure essential oils, sesame seed, coconut oil or Arnica oil.
Over a basin, tilt your head at 90 degrees and insert nozzle into nostril, gently squeezing water to flush out your sinuses.
The water should go in the one nostril, and out the other. This is challenging at first, find a position of the head that works for you.

  • It is flu-season – try to prevent SEVERE infection (viral or bacterial).
  • You likely WILL get infected with COVID-19 at some point during this pandemic (according to statistics).
  • The key is to boost your immune system to DEAL will the infection and prevent you from needing admission to ICU.

Immune-Boosting Medicines
(evidence-based benefits according to medical literature):  

  • Vitamin C: 1 gram every 8 hours, taken orally. Coyne’s Liposomal Vitamin C is very well absorbed, doesn’t cause diarrhea, and is a natural anti-viral and anti-bacterial. If you have flu-like symptoms, take 1-2 caps (approximately 1.4g) every 2-4 hours. Preventative dose: 1 cap three times per day.
  • Vitamin D (oral spray from Coyne or caps from Metagenics) is vital in for fighting infection (treatment) and building immunity (prevention) to prevent infection. Anti-inflammatory properties. Take 5000iu per day, if you have flu-symptoms, take 10 000iu daily until well.
  • Zinc (Willow Brand contains magnesium and B6, easy on digestive system): Zinc plays a vital role in maintaining healthy cellular immune function, and magnesium is used in over 300 processes in the body, and decreased during times of stress. B6 decreases inflammation in tissues and helps buffer stress reactions. 
  • Olive Leaf Tincture from Willow (20 drops mixed with 20ml warm water, gargle twice per day and swallow).
  • Omega, Purest fish oil (Coyne Health) supports the immune system by enhancing the function of immune cells. Also provides anti-inflammatory benefits.

Infection with the COVID-19 Virus can cause a wide variety of symptoms: 

  • Upper respiratory tract infection (sore throat, sinusitis, blocked or running nose)
  • Chest complaints (cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, distress)
  • Diarrhea and vomiting (gastro-enteritis).
  • Fever more than 38 degrees C (not always)
  • Painful muscles and joints (Myalgia)
  • No symptoms or very mild symptoms
  • More new symptoms being reported every day

STEP one: If you have any of the following DANGER SIGNS, please call your doctor:

  • Fever more than 39 degrees C, not responding to paracetamol or tepid sponging after 2 hours.
  • Severe headache, not responding to paracetamol.
  • Neck stiffness is a danger sign.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Increase rate of breathing (count the number of breaths you need to take in one minute). More than 25 breaths per minute means you are likely distressed.
    For children and babies, any shortness of breath, drawing in of chest/rib muscles, blue discoloration of face, lips and nails – call a doctor immediately!

*If you have any of the above symptoms and have had contact with a COVID-19 confirmed or suspected case, please book a rapid test urgently (testing centers listed below).

If MILD symptoms, STEP 2:

Take 1g Vitamin C every 2 hours and vitamin D 10 000iu daily until your symptoms have resolved.

ADD: Biomax Magnesium (Coyne) sachets: Magnesium is used in over 300 cellular processes in the body, especially when you are feeling ill. Helps improve sleep quality and muscle cramps, decreases blood pressure and may help with constipation. 

Garlic concentrate (Willow): take 2 caps three time per day as a natural anti-viral and anti-biotic. Contra-indicated if taking anti-coagulants.

Pain and fever relief:
Natruflam with Serrapeptase (Willow brand), take one cap every 6 hours. Bio-Canna CBD oil (Coyne Health), take 3 drops 2-3 times per day, natural anti-inflammatory and potent sleeping aid.

Sore throat or Tonsillitis:

  • Tonsilex Tincture drops (Willow Brand), 15 drops taken 4 times per day with warm water.
  • Olive leaf tincture, add 20 drops to 20ml water and gargle then swallow, repeat twice per day.
  • OR Kids and elderly: Andolex C spray, use 3 sprays 3 times per day with local anesthetic and anti-bacterial properties.
  • OR Tonsila (Natura homeopathic remedy), take 2 tablets 3 times per day. 

Wet or dry cough with a tight chest:

  • Broncoff tincture drops (Willow Brand, purely herbal), 10-20 drops every 4 hours.
  • OR GrippeFlu (Heel homeopathic and herbal combination) Cough Syrup, great for kids and adults to alleviate dry or wet cough.
  • Cough if you’re asthmatic or have chronic lung disease/smoker: Brochospas Tincture drops (Willow Brand, purely herbal), take 10-20 drops 4 hourly.
  • AND Lung and Spleen Tincture (Willow brand): this incredible herbal medicine helps move infected lymph from the lungs and respiratory tract, to drain tissues and enhance immunity by boosting white blood cells to do their infection-fighting work. Take 10-20 drops 3 times per day.

Sinusitis or Blocked/running/itchy nose or post-nasal drip:

Gastro (diarrhea and vomiting):
